Abstract
A case of a solitary non-parasitic cyst of the liver of a 32-year-old Korean female is presented.
She had the complaint of a palpable mass with vague aching, sensation in the right upper abdomen of 3 months¢¥ duration.
Physical. examination revealed the enlarged liver (four-finger-breadth below the right costal margin) with a soft bulging mass 4 cm in diameter in it. Barium studies of the upper gastro-intestinal tract revealed an extrinsic pressure defect on the lesser¢¥ curvature of `the - stomach probably due to enlarged. liver and a liver scan demonstrated a large space occupying lesion involving the almost entire right lobe.Liver function tests were within normal limits: The liver was aspirated several times, removing total amount of. 2, 000 ml. of dark brown, odorless and thick fluid:
Laparotomy was performed under the preoperative diagnosis of cyst of the liver and the patient was found to have a large (14 X 12 X 7 cm) cyst, of the right lobe of the liver. The cyst was relatively thick-walled and contained turbid, yellowish brown fluid. The parenchyma of the¢¥ right lobe of the liver was almost destroyed and compressed by the cyst. No other cysts were found in any other organ.
The microscopic finding was that the cystic mass was a giant solitary non-parasitic cyst of the liver derived from, the cavernous hemangioma. The remaining liver parenchyma showed mild fibrosis with degeneration and necrosis.
The patient has, remained well to the present date, one land a half years following the complete excision of the cyst.
